Marketplace Massage Therapy’s complimentary brownies

If you were in our massage therapy clinic in Barrhaven on the weekend, you probably were offered a delicious gluten-free dark chocolate brownie. I am happy to share the recipe with you here, so that you can spread the word about how tasty and healthy non-wheat foods can be.

Just a quick note about why we should cut back on eating wheat. As Dr. William Davis explains in his best-selling book and cookbook Wheat Belly, today’s wheat “has been genetically altered to provide processed-food manufacturers the greatest yield at the lowest cost; consequently, this once-benign grain has been transformed into a nutritionally bankrupt yet ubiquitous ingredient that causes blood sugar to spike more rapidly than eating pure table sugar and has addictive properties that send us on a roller coaster of hunger, over-eating and fatigue.”

A wheat-free diet is easier than you might think and any initial inconveniences finding wheat-free replacements are minimal compared to the significant healthy life benefits such as reduced weight, reduced intestinal and joint inflammation, alleviation of diabetes, and a healthier heart. Personally, I have noticed a big improvement in overall energy. When I eat wheat I feel bloated and tired, but not with these brownies!

Gluten/wheat free brownies:
3/4 cup butter melted (or coconut butter)
1 cup brown sugar
3 eggs, beaten
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 1/4 cups almond flour
1/2 teaspoon xanthum/guar gum
1/2 cup cocoa
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup chopped dark chocolate
1 cup frozen raspberries (optional)
1 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Melt butter then add sugar, vanilla, eggs and stir until the sugar dissolves. Stir in the dry ingredients one at a time. Bake in a 9″ square pan or similar for 25-30 minutes at 350 degrees.

Therapeutic Massage in 3 simple steps

Massage therapy may be something your doctor recommended you try for relieving muscle pain, stiffness or stress.

Perhaps you received a gift certificate but have never had a professional massage.

You might think it a waste of time and money. But even frugal fans know it’s worth every penny.

Consider these three simple steps to maximize the health benefits of your next massage:

1. Talk to your massage therapist enough to tell them about any concerns or problem areas. Do you want to have those muscles worked on and feel that ‘good pain’ or do you really just need to relax and de-stress? Both types of massage are beneficial, but be clear with your Registered Massage Therapist so you get what you expect. Then opt to chat less and focus on relaxing your body more. It’s the perfect time to still your mind.

2. Set the stage for yourself. Ask your massage therapist to adjust anything that’s not helping you get into your cozy zone. It’s your time, so let’s be sure to have the music and lighting just right and the temperature perfect for you. You don’t need to be shy about your body, as your RMT is trained in sheet-draping techniques to protect your modesty.

3. Now practice relaxing and listening to your body. Be aware of how your muscles feel when massaged: is there good pain, bad pain or no pain? You may be surprised that your muscles engage or tense up, but you and your RMT will soon learn what pressure is appropriate for you. The more you can relax and not tense up, the better you’ll receive the therapy. Take some deep breaths to distract your mind from any pain. Don’t worry, your body will soon learn to remember to relax and it’ll get easier the more you practice!

Try these three simple steps next time you slip between the sheets. You’ll soon be a professional yourself at relaxing your mind and body.

Barrhaven chiropractor hosts conscious parenting group meeting March 13, 2013 at Marketplace Family Chiropractic CenterMarketplace Family Chiropractic Centre empowering you with the information you need to raise a healthy family.

As you know we have always been very holistic in our lifestyle and our parenting. We do our best to make active, conscious choices for how we raise our children instead of following cultural norms or our own past programming.

Often practice members want to know more about how we live and the evidence that led us to our choices. Now is you chance to have more time to ask Dr. Nancy all your parenting and natural health questions.

Pathways connect is a gathering of parents who are making conscious, holistic parenting choices. These gathering are based on the quarterly magazine, Pathways to Family Wellness, but you do not need to have read the magazine ahead of time.

Meetings will be hosted by Dr. Nancy Salgueiro and are open to families interested in gaining knowledge and support from other parents who are also on the path of making more conscious lifestyle choices.

Meetings will be held at Marketplace Family Chiropractic Centre on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 7pm. Children are welcome.

Next Positive Birth Group Meeting is Feb 27 at 7pm

Our last Positive Birth Group meeting went well. January’s theme was images of birth. Our discussion centred around how media has created our visual images of birth and how we can change that images we hold in our mind by watching videos of good births.  We also shared some of our favorite birth videos including my life birth footage and some of my inspirations.

The next Positive Birth Movement Meeting is coming up Wednesday, February 27 at 7pm.

The theme for this month is ‘Language of Birth’.

Massage therapy pays in the end.

Ever wonder just how much you spend on your car each year?

It can run to thousands of dollars, and that’s just for gas, oil and insurance. Then there’s the inevitable cost of repairs and maybe new tyres or brakes. The bill adds up. Funny thing is, we usually don’t hesitate to pay to keep our car on the road. And when the car gets old and cranky and starts to break down, we just trade it in!

Question is: how much money do you pay each year to maintain your BODY, because replacement parts and trade-ins are really not an option.

What happens as we age, get stressed, or succumb to low-grade fuel like junk food?

Maybe you already know how that feels. Do you spend more on your body than on your car?  It doesn’t need to be costly, and the benefits will far outlast any expense.

In fact a lot of it is free: you can de-stress by taking a walk, listening to music, or meditating. Try moving your body out of its comfort zone by stretching, striding and getting your blood moving.

You can also use any health-plan coverage for chiropractic care or massage therapy to achieve your very best muscular and joint health. If you don’t  have coverage or it’s not enough, set a monthly budget for maintenance work on your body so that you can live well now and avoid break-downs later!

It’s your body to live in and use how you please. Treat it right and it’ll run like a Rolls.


How Long do You Want to Live?

According to the National Post:  “Nearly everywhere around the world, people are living longer and fewer children are dying. But increasingly, people are grappling with the diseases and disabilities of modern life, according to the most expansive global look so far at life expectancy and the biggest health threats.”

So, how long do I want to live?  Well, that all depends, with what quality of life we are talking about?  If we are talking about living longer with more chronic disease, no thank you.  If we are talking about a long life filled with health and vitality, then sign me up. 

Maybe people say they would rather enjoy their life now and live a shorter life but what if that lifestyle of excess doesn’t end your life early just destroys the quality of your life.

Thanks to modern medicine, the lifesytle of excess doesn’t necessarily kill you sooner.  We can now keep you alive longer through chemical intervention, i.e. drugs, but you will live with years, if not, decades of chronic degenerative disease.

 “The biggest contributor to the global health burden isn’t premature [deaths], but chronic diseases, injuries, mental health conditions and all the bone and joint diseases.”

“Malnutrition was once the main health threat for children. Now, everywhere except Africa, they are much more likely to overeat than to starve.”

Overeating is actually worse for your long term health than slight undereating. 

What we must always remember is that if we do what everyone else does we get what everyone else gets.  Right now what everyone else gets is high blood pressure, heart diease, and cancer. 

If you want different, you must choose different.

Is Enriched Cereal with Iron Good for You?

I came across this video on YouTube called ‘Shocking Truth About Cereal Exposed 2012‘ and I have to say, it was definitely shocking!  The video shows that the iron used in an enriched box of cereal are actual metallic iron filings!
