Make Your Own Sunscreen

Summer is here and so is the need for sunscreen. Unfortunately with all the negative information about the dangerous chemicals in sunscreens and their impact on your health and the environment it makes you wonder if sunscreen is doing more harm and than good.

After visiting the Environmental Working Group’s webpage, I found that they did a study on the safety and effectiveness of sunscreens in 2009. They studied 1,572 skincare products containing sunscreen and found that 3 out of 5 products actually provide inadequate protection from the sun. However, this was an improvement from last year, when 4 out of 5 failed to meet the EWG’s standards for safe sun care.

While I could write this entire post about the harmful ingredients in sunscreens which are detrimental to your health and to the environment, I suggest that you visit the Environmental Working Group’s webpage and make your own decisions about what you want to apply to your skin or that of your children. With that in mind, below are some sun block recipes that are eco-friendly and do not contain any harmful ingredients.

Below are recipes to make your own sun block:

Sun Block Recipe 1
5 oz grapeseed oil
1 tablespoon Shea butter
1/2 oz beeswax
*4 oz lavender hydrosol (or any other hydrosol you like)
2 tablespoons zinc oxide powder

Mix the oil, Shea butter and beeswax in a 2 cup heat proof glass or Pyrex measuring cup, place the measuring cup in a pot partially filled with water (to act as a double boiler), melt over medium-high heat. Add the zinc powder. Allow to cool until a crust starts to form around the edges. Using a hand blender, begin to slowly pour the hydrosol into the oil. Keep mixing until all the hydrosol is fully incorporated and the cream is smooth. Pour into a clean, sterilized jar. Store in the refrigerator.

* Hydrosol – is the condensed water that is left behind when plants are steam distilled to make essential oil. Similar to waters made from roses and lavenders and other herbs, except more pure and a little more concentrated. You can make your own waters, just by steeping an herb in warm water and straining. Learn how to make rosewater here.

Sun Block Recipe 2
1 Tablespoon zinc oxide
1 1/2 tsp light sesame oil
1 Tablespoon rosewater
Couple drops of essential oil – your choice or try peppermint, lavender, rosemary

Mix together the zinc oxide and sesame oil. Heat the mixture gently, using a double boiler, and stir well to mix. Remove from heat and slowly add the rosewater and essential oil, as you continue stirring. Allow to cool completely, and store in a clean container with a tight lid, in the fridge. Yield: 2 oz. Keeps: Up to 10 days in the fridge.

Sun Block Recipe 3
6 Tablespoons avocado oil
3 Tablespoons Shea butter
1 Tablespoon beeswax
1 teaspoon soy lecithin
1 capsule vitamin E
1 Tablespoon aloe Vera gel
2 Tablespoon zinc oxide
3-5 drops essential oil (optional)

Melt the Shea butter and beeswax in a double boiler. Mix in the avocado oil, lecithin, aloe Vera gel, zinc oxide, and essential oil. Store in clean container and refrigerate.

As you can see by the above ingredients, zinc or titanium oxide is the active ingredients in these sun block recipes. Unlike sunscreens, zinc and titanium oxide block all sunlight (both UVA and UVB rays) from the skin thus providing a high SPF.

Sunscreen is definitely one of those products you should look at carefully before purchasing.  Many sunscreen companies do a great job marketing but that doesn’t mean they are great products.  When addressing anything regarding our health we always want to assess risks, benefits, and alternative.  Here is a risk:benefit ratio looking at using sunscreen.

Risk vs Benefit of using sunscreen:

Risk: Most sunscreens are filled with toxic cancer causing chemicals, that when put on the skin get absorbed into the body and lead to incraesed toxic load and cancer.

Benefit: Can help prevent your skin from burning, which can also lead to cancer.

Overall the risk of cancer has been found to be greater with sunscreen that without.

Risk vs Benefit of not using sunscreen:

Risk: Your skin could burn with over exposure.

Benefit: You produce vitamin D which is essentially for your body to fight off cancer.

Overall we NEED the vitamin D and can minimize risk of burning my reducing exposure times.

The alternative solution is get some full exposure to the sun to produce vitamin D.  When you are going to be exposed for prolonged periods or have extremely sensitive skin use a natural sunscreen.  It will do the job of the commercial sunscreens and will not layer toxic chemicals all of the largest organ of your body, your skin.  Take a look at the recipes above or come to the office and pick up some Green Beaver Organic Sunscreen.  Green Beaver is a Canadian company who makes all natural products and has the only line of certified organic kids products on the market.

Chiropractic and Cancer

This video does a great job explaining the role chiropractic care can play for people battling cancer.  Chiropractic does not claim to treat cancer, nor do chiropractors treat back pain or headaches.   Our job is to facilitate the natural healing powers of the body to help you unleash your potential.  A properly functioning nervous system is key to normal body function and is especially important when your body has the extra job of fighting off cancer.  Your immune system is what kills off the cancerous cells in the body and needs to be at its best to fight most effectively.   Like all other systems of the body the immune system depends on vital information from the brain to function normally and optimally.

Chiropractic Featured on the Dr. Oz Show

“On the show Dr. Oz aired a segment featuring the spine and the causes of back pain. Dr. Oz explained that 80% of people experiencing back pain could benefit from visiting a chiropractor and receiving a chiropractic adjustment to the spine.

On a large piece of equipment designed to represent the spine, Dr. Oz demonstrated how the spine getting out of alignment causes pressure on the discs and nerves, which in turn, causes pain. Dr. Oz said that even simple things such as sleeping wrong or getting groceries out of the car can force the spine out of alignment.

Dr. Oz explained that pain medications only mask the symptoms, but do not treat the underlying cause of back pain. He also said that a misaligned spine can result in a herniated disc which causes a lot of pain and takes quite a while to heal.”

Living A Long Healthy Life

Everybody wants to live as long as possible, but many people are not prepared for the burden of living longer both financially and physically. Living longer sounds really good, but aging itself increases the risk of chronic conditions that can make life even more difficult as you age.

So, what can to do to make living longer a reality without sacrificing quality of life?

First you must realize that aging well takes planning. If you are reading this article right now you are deserve a pat on the back for being a small percentage of the population that is looking ahead, and preparing for their future. Many people are not prepared for the complications that can happen as we age, or prefer to turn a blind eye. It is important none the less to prepare for tomorrow, by living better today. Preparation is like money in the bank, so that you can live a wonderful long healthy life, and really enjoy it.

Why do you need to prepare to live longer? Wear and tear to your body; it is the expected progression of aging. Research data illustrates that a number in the range of 88% of American Citizens over 65 years of age are suffering from at least one chronic medical condition and Australia statistics states at about half their populous over 65 suffer with a long term health condition. These are the facts, and unfortunately most people accept that a chronic health condition is part of aging, but what if you could prevent many of them?

What is a chronic medical condition? A chronic medical condition, any illness or health condition that lasts longer than three month time period, and chronic illnesses as expected become more common place as one lives longer.

Chronic or long term health conditions do not just happen overnight. They are usually a result of other extrinsic factors, and can be traced to alcohol use, tobacco use, lack of exercise, unhealthy diet choices, obesity, neglecting oral care, and not getting enough sleep- these are just few of the major contributors that lead to chronic diseases that can include:

Chronic Medical Conditions
* Arthritis – Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis, Polymyalgia rheumatica
* Hearing Loss – Presbycusis, Ototoxicity, Requiring hearing aids, Tinnitus,
* Oral Health Problems – Periodontal diseases Oral cancers, Loss of bone, soft tissue damage, dentures, implants, Diabetes, Advanced gum disease, Oral Health and Hygiene
* Cancer- Prostate Cancer, Skin Cancer (Non-melanoma), Lung Cancer, liver cancer, Bladder Cancer, Melanoma, Gallbladder Cancer, Gastric (Stomach)Cancer, Breast,Mouth Cancer, Colon and Rectal Cancer
* Cardiovascular Diseases- Strokes, Diseases of Veins, heart attacks, cerebrovacular diseases, Angina pectoris, High Blood Pressure, Peripheral artery disease, heart failure, Arrhythmias, TIA
* Chronic Pain Disorders – Neuralgia, Elbow Pain, Shoulder Pain, Spine Pain, Foot Pain, Hand Pain, Hip Pain and more.
* Diabetes- Blindness, loss of limbs, and circulatory problems.

How To Live A Longer and Healthier Life

First and foremost you must respect your own body. Respect comes in many forms:

1. Eating Properly

If you are familiar with Hippocrates you may have read the quote “Let food be thy medicine, and let medicine be thy food”.

2. Maintain an Ideal Weight

Maintaining your ideal weight is very important for as you pile on the pounds you are much more apt to develop type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and triglycerides, coronary artery disease (CAD), high blood pressure, stroke, and sleep apnea, among other conditions.

Caloric restriction has been touted by some as the road to the fountain of youth: One professor of pathology at the University of Michigan, Richard Miller, M.D., Ph.D., has spent the last 20 years researching the ways in which dietary and genetic changes can slow the aging process. His studies have shown that mice, rats, and monkeys that have undergone severe caloric restriction demonstrate all kinds of mental and physical benefits such as better mental function, less joint disease, and even fewer cases of cataracts.

3. Stop Smoking

Smoking affects every major organ in your body. Giving up the habit or never starting it will increase your chances of living longer, and prevent diseases such as cancer, lung diseases, and heart problems.

4. Remain Active

Move it or lose it. Staying active by walking, riding a bike, bowling, gardening, light weight lifting, or using resistance bands which are my favorite little home gym for any age group or fitness level

5. Getting Enough Sleep

A survey done by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke showed that at least 40 million Americans suffer from chronic, long-term sleep disorders. The effects of sleep deprivation on the body can include; the development of diabetes according to a 2006 study. The study showed that lack of sleep is linked with deterioration in blood glucose control in type 2 diabetics.
Getting 5 hours or less of sleep a night has been connected to weight gain, poor memory, lower concentration, and higher incidence of heart disease (coronary artery calcification).

6. Wear Sunscreen Every Day

UV rays not only age your skin and cause wrinkling, but are the cause of a very dangerous and deadly form of cancer called melanoma.

7. Maintain Proper Oral Health – Floss Daily

Studies have proven that bad oral hygiene goes beyond dental carries and gum disease; it can contribute to heart disease, osteoporosis, lung problems, and a very strong link to diabetes.

8. Learn to De-stress Your Life

A little stress is actually good for you, as it acts as a little built in alarm for your brain, but stress becomes very unhealthy if it goes on for long periods, and can affect your health increasing your risks of developing; heart disease, high blood sugar, high cholesterol, and raises your risk of depression.

Learn to de-stress via; Meditation, listening to music, writing in a diary, having a hobby, and learn to visualize and think positively.

9. Take Anti Oxidant Supplements

Our modern diets are killing us. We have progressed over thousands of years of occasionally restricting our calories and eating antioxidant rich diet to, in the past century, to constantly eating highly processed foods with low antioxidant levels. What this ultimately means is that we are experiencing more free radicals and more disease than ever before.

Everyone should take one mulit-vitamin daily especially if they are eating fast food during the week. Also, speaking of supplements, you have probably heard by now a supplement called Resveratrol. It offers the amazing health benefits of red vine, and is one of the most powerful antioxidants that was discovered in red wine or actually the skin of a certain grape that is made into red wine.

The health benefits that are being studied are pretty spectacular: cancer prevention and longevity are two that are amazing scientists and catapulting more research. The studies are proving that this powerful anti aging antioxidant can protect your heart, help prevent strokes, lower cholesterol, and much, much more. You can learn more about this antioxidant supplement and all the amazing health benefits here at Resveratrol Pills.

Barrhaven’s Marketplace Family Chiropractic Centre Doctor’s Comments:

This article summarizes some of the keys to loving longer and better.  I disagree with the comment on wearing sunscreen.  The sun is iessential for life and essential for us to produce vitamin D.  Most of us, especially here in Canada, are deficient in Vitamin D.  The essential vitamin, really a hormone, is essential to help in the healing process and to prevent chronic degenerative diseases like cancer and heart disease.  Without it we will be lead down the road of chronic health problems.  On top of that most sunscreens are filled with toxic cancer causing chemicals.  When you do need to be in the sun for extended periods, cover up with a hat and some loose clothing.  If you do need sunscreen, choose an all natural sunscreen like the one from Green Beaver.

Can Chiropractic Help Heal a Herniated Disc?

Many people ask if chiropractic care can help with a bulging or herniated disc.  In my opinion, it is by far the best way of helping your body heal.  Most other treatments offered conventionally only aim to mask the symptoms until your body’s signals start to subside.  Just because your symptoms have decreased in intensity does not mean your body has healed.  It only means the initial inflammation has been reduced.  The problem with the disc is still present and can continue to degrade.  Chiropractic can get to the cause of the problem and directly help heal your disc.  Read the article below to understand how.

Can Chiropractic Treatment Help a Herniated Disc?

What is a Herniated Disc?

People who suffer from back pain, leg pain, excessive weakness in the legs, and abnormal functions of the lower extremities are often diagnosed with a herniated disc. The question is – exactly what is a herniated disc, and how is it determined if this is causing the symptoms?

An intervertebral disc is made up of an outer, fibrous ring, and a central soft portion. The disc itself receives nourishment through the motion of the vertebrae above and below it moving and “squishing” the blood and fluids through the disc. If this movement does not occur, the outer ring can dry and tear which allows the soft portion of the disc to bulge out. This is what is commonly known as a herniated disc. (Also called a slipped disc, bulging disc, disc protrusion, etc.)

Not all herniated discs cause pain or discomfort. It is when the bulge puts pressure on the exiting spinal nerve that pain, or an inflammatory reaction, will occur. It is therefore very important to have a full understanding of what is causing the pain.

What is Subluxation?

Another term important to understand in the diagnosis of a herniated disc is subluxation. Subluxation is when one or more of the bones of your spine (vertebrae) move out of position. The result can be a herniated disc. If this creates pressure on spinal nerves, problems will result. This pressure or irritation on the nerves causes the nerves to malfunction and interfere with the signals traveling over those nerves.

Symptoms can be one or more of the following:
· Pain spreading over the buttocks, down the back of one thigh, and into the calf
· Pain may be in one leg (more common) or both legs
· Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the legs or feet
· Numbness, tingling, or weakness in one or both arms
· In severe cases, inability to find comfort even lying down
· Sudden aching or twisted neck that cannot be straightened without severe pain
· Bowel or bladder changes and/or numbness in the groin

Treatments for a herniated can range from physical therapy, to anti-inflammatory medication, to cortisone shots to surgery. Because back surgery is extremely invasive, and because surgery is not always totally successful in correcting the problem, it would be wise to seek out the services of a doctor of chiropractic first. Before resorting to a surgical approach, it just makes good sense to try a more conservative procedure.

A doctor of chiropractic is trained to locate subluxations, and reduce or correct them. This can be accomplished through a series of chiropractic adjustments designed to correct the vertebral subluxations in your spine. Chiropractors are the only professionals who undergo years of training to be experts at correcting subluxations. There are methods to decompress the vertebrae which allow the disc the ability to heal itself.

Early Diagnosis

Be aware that few treatments – even chiropractic treatment – can make up for years of abuse and neglect of spinal health that many people endure. Poor nutrition, poor posture, lack of proper exercise, and even incorrect lifting methods are among the many ways the spine suffers abuse.

Early diagnosis and conservative treatment is the best way to begin correcting the pain suffered from a herniated disc. And the chiropractic approach is an excellent first choice for extended pain relief and for a healthier spine in the future!
